Ask the Experts: NASA Announces Design for New Deep Space Rocket
This article written for Ask the Experts looks at the latest rockets that in time could transport a new generation of Astronauts into Space:
NASA unveiled their plans this week for a new heavy-lift rocket that will transport the next generation of astronauts into space and the first explorers to Mars.
Former space shuttle astronaut, Bill Nelson, who is the Senator for Florida described it as the “most powerful rocket in history.” He said: “This is perhaps the biggest thing for space exploration in decades. The goal is to fly humans safely beyond low-Earth orbit and deep into outer space where we can not only survive, but one day also live.”
For many space exploration enthusiasts the Space Launch System (SLS), whose first mission is anticipated by the end of 2017, this is a welcome announcement. It has been over four decades since NASA launched their former “exploration-class vehicle,” the Saturn V rocket, which transported early astronauts in the Space programme to the Moon.
