On the 25th May 1961, only weeks after astronaut Alan Shepherd became the first American and second man in space, President John F Kennedy addressed congress, igniting the imagination and passion of the American people, and the world.
Whilst his infamous speech covered several subjects of ‘urgent national needs’ it was within the ninth segment that JFK spoke about Space with his now iconic words: “I believe that this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to the earth.”
