Ask the Experts: NASA Invests In Tractor Beam Research
Tractor beam technology, the use of laser light to ‘trap and move objects’ has been in research and development since the 1990’s. In the world of science fiction tractor beams have been around and active for some time.
Darth Vader and Obi Wan Kenobi’s iconic duel occurred after tractor beams from the Death Star captured the Millennium Falcon.
But now science fact is catching up fast.
At NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center three scientists, Paul Stysley, Demetrios Poulios and Barry Coyle were recently awarded funding by the NASA Office of the Chief Technologist (OCT) to study the ‘concept for remotely capturing planetary or atmospheric particles and delivering them to a robotic rover or orbiting spacecraft for analysis.’
