Ask the Experts: Turning Urine Into Rocket Fuel

This week scientists announced their latest findings on bacteria that can survive without oxygen and convert ammonium, a key element of urine, into hydrazine, which is a form of rocket fuel.

Originally identified back in the 1990’s, the germs created by anammox, or anaerobic ammonium oxidation, were an exciting discovery.  However, understanding them has taken time.

Researchers at Radboud University Nijmegen in the Netherlands recently reported, in a letter published by the British science journal Nature, that they have identified the molecular mechanism through which the bugs make the conversion to fuel.
